By "VX1 shakes", do you mean an Oxygen VX1 graphics card?
If so, please tell more...
I'm running an Oxygen VX1 in a one-processor UP2000 with
RH7.1 and XFree86 4.2.0 compiled from xfree86.org sources.
With XFree86 4.0.* and 4.1.0, I was seeing persistent gunk
scribbled on the screen. With XFree86 4.2.0, I'm seeing
quick (probably one frame duration) flashes on the screen
when something moves or updates elsewhere on the screen,
but at least I can get 24-bit color (32-bit for Maurice :-)
working.
The flashes are independent of SWcursor vs. HWcursor.
