2.4.17 kernel issues: pauses, etc.

I recently switched from RH's 2.4.9-21 kernel to 2.4.17 from
kernel.org (or wherever it was), but I saw some issues with
it.  Several times, when printing something from Netscape, I
would hit <ENTER> inside the grey print dialog box and the
whole display (and who knows what else) would pause for a
second or two.  Even the mouse cursor was paralyzed.  I'm
guessing perhaps interrupts were disabled while the print job
was being sent to the USB printer.  Other users were seeing
background colors on their Gnome desktop changing spontaneously
during a session, but that may be more of an XFree86 4.2.0
issue--hard to tell.

Has anyone else (who has tried 2.4.17) seen this type of
problem, pausing or X color changes?

Oh, my system is a one-processor UP2000 running RH7.1.
