The best place to report such things is not that list but
linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org .  Writing here about that is probably
even counterproductive as it will be not noticed by those who
should know.

2.4.17 is known to still have VM issues and you would have
apply extra patches from Andrea or, alternatively, to use one
of 2.4.18pre...-ac... kernels and then it should be markedly better.
Reports clearly indicating that problems are not some obscure
corner cases but happen in everyday use are clearly of value. :-)
