I do not think (somebody correct me if I am mistaken) that there are
cards for which 24 and 32 bit depth modes are really different.  These
are just different video memory mappings.  In any case close to 17
millions of different collors is likely a bit more that your monitor can
show anyway. :-)

Moreover with X 4.0.x 24 colour depth is the maximum what you can get.
Not sure if for all cards but I would be not surprised if this would be
the case.  A bit planes in a frame buffer is something different and
sometimes it is useful to specify that indpendently.  You may have in
your config file, in "Screen" section, something like that:

       DefaultDepth 24
       DefaultFbBpp 32

and also you have separate options '-depth' and '-fbbpp' for
direct calls.
