It won't error-out if you pass a flag of "i" (stands for "interactive" :-).

Unfortunately, he doesn't have any alternate kernels on the install CD...

This looks like a bad CD, even though it does get aboot off it. If
you're unwilling/unable to burn another, try getting the two floppy
images off it (on another system) and try that way. You may find that
that other system can't read (parts of) the CD either.
