To the List:
Many thanks to everyone who suggested various cures for the 3Dlabs
Oxygen VX1 video card shakes.
I kept working with the setup. Sometime it was possible to open a bunch
of windows/applications on-screen and clear up the problem ... sometime
it was possible to boot up and have no problem at all. Once the display
stopped that rythmic blacking out, it was possible to log out as user,
log in as root, whatever, and things would still be OK.
I put my old 4D10T card back in so I could run my Windows NT, and tried
it out in RedHat 7.1, to see if it would work. RedHat detected the new
card while booting and turned on the "Kudzu" utility. I discarded my
old settings and used the 4D10T card at 1280x1024, 16 bit color. It was
OK, nothing great. When I changed back, kudzu came up again. I decided
to try a different screen resolution.
I set the VX1 up at
24 bit color, 1280x1024
Have booted up several times since with no more major problems. I still
get the little white flashes like static when i right click the mouse.
Others way smarter at Linux than I have reported the same problem and
are looking for a solution.
Long as I have a stable screen, I'm going to leave it at 1280x1024 and
work on more interesting things ...
like getting either Linux or Digital Unix to mount the other OS plus NT.
