RedHat 7.1 on AlphaStation 500

Anybody experience the system locking up during the load of linux on alpha?.
I am trying to load redhat 7.1 but have experienced similar problems in the
past with Debian on NTSI 500mhz. The current load I am trying hangs during
the lad of desktop utilities modules. not 100% sure on name . Trying
different load methods I get different results, using 0 with 2.4
installation gives me the most trouble.
