For example this:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&threadm=linux.kernel.20020325003159.A2340%40thunk.org&rnum=4&prev=/groups%3Fq%3De2fsprogs-1.27%26meta%3Dsite%253Dgroups

A message from Ted Tso where he says:

"Yeah, I forced the release of e2fsprogs 1.27 because of this, back on
March 8th. That was my fault, and I fixed it as soon as I discovered
it. (1.26 was released on Feb 3, and I released 1.27 on March 8th)."

The whole message and its thread, with a subject "Does e2fsprogs-1.26
work on mips?", are consideably longer and explain _what_ is actually
broken; see also a thread "setrlimit and RLIM_INFINITY causing fsck
failure, 2.4.18" from March.

That very well may be the case. Troubles with 1.26 were mentioned
few times on this list but you would have to check archives.
This bugs affects some platforms, Alpha in particular, but x86 is
not among them.

Well, then for some problems you have to rely on those who actually
do have the hardware in question. But in this case this is not
a question of hardware. As long as your file system is healthy then
things should be ok; some cases of corruption may trigger a catastrophic
failure.
