Hi List, Firstly let me say I am new to the world of Linux.  I have recently acquired an AlphaServer 2000 5/300, on which I would like to install a copy of Linux.  I believe that 'Redhat 7.1 for Alpha' should support this machine. I have searched through a number of web sites, and found various little bits of information regarding these machines, and the installation of Linux via the SRM, Aboot and other boot loaders, etc.  For the most part the SRM on my alpha does not appear to support many of the commands suggested. I am looking for some advice as to what I may be doing wrong, and or more specific information to get me over this hurdle. I have a copy of Redhat 7.1 on CD, created from an ISO I downloaded. When I issue a boot command to the cdrom, ie 'boot dka400.4.0.1.0', the server starts and runs the Aboot kernel.I am then presented with the options of which type of install I want to do. I can select any of the installation options, and the Aboot application tries to install the Linux software, but fails almostimmediately with an error 'Failed to send Read to dka400.4.0.1.0', (message repeated upto 8 times), followed by another error message 'unzip crc_error'. Now I am confused, do I have a corrupted vmlinux.gz file, or is there a problem with the cdrom??The only other pc/os I have access to is an intel/win98 system.  Are there any tools I can use to test the integrity of the vmlinux.gz file?? Can any body offer some helpful advice to get this server running?? ThanksNeil

unzip crc_error would indicate that the vmlinux.gz is corrupt which in turn would indicate that you've got a bad ISO set OR that your CD lens needs cleaning
