netscape requires hostname in $DISPLAY

Sorry for the partially off-topic question, but the Alpha-Linux
version of Netscape has enough of its own peculiar quirks that
perhaps it's not completely off topic.
I changed DSL ISP's today, from Internet Arena alias Netrover
to Verizon. It seems that change caused netscape to refuse to
connect with the X server. With a value of ":2.0" for the
DISPLAY environment variable, I get the following error
messages (indentation mine):
Xlib: connection to ":2.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: :2.0
If I prepend the host name onto $DISPLAY, Netscape works fine.
Any suggestions other than a wrapper script to modify $DISPLAY
and then call the real Netscape?
(Yes, I'm planning to move to Mozilla, as soon as I hack the
code to make top-level windows materialize at the screen origin
of my choosing.)
Thanks.
