hdparm can be used to time disk reads:
hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  1.81 seconds = 35.36 MB/sec

As for writes, you could maybe time a dd if=/dev/zero of=test...


Or grab a copy of bonnie++, and run it.
That is a good, and well recognized benchmark, with reliable and reproducible results.
