gcj not compiling

Greetings,

Does anyone know the solution to the following problem
that causes gcj to refuse to compile anything:

hellogcj.java:0: Can't find default package `java.lang'. Check the CLASSPATH environment variable and the access to the archives.
1 error

This is on Redhat Linux Alpha 7.1, fully updated.  I
have all RPMs listed in Redhat's gcj technical paper,
so it would appear it should work.  Is this an Alpha-specific
problem or non-X86-specific problem?
