If he's going IDE, wouldn't it be possible to have SRM boot from a smaller
drive hooked to the onboard IDE, and then have most of the system reside
on a larger IDE drive hooked to a faster controller?

I haven't done IDE on any of my Alphas, (and in fact I've never even
played with a PWS) so maybe there's something I'm overlooking.

I'm pretty sure SRM can't boot from the IDE drives. Anyway, since the IDE interface on the PWS series is PIO only (not DMA) it really sucks. You can use milo to boot from an IDE drive though.
