I'm not going to argue the "won't sell" bit (since I don't know the sales
numbers at all, nor was I in a position to know them even then), but the
implied reasoning behind the above progression is incorrect...Compaq
wasn't "stuck" with anything, nor did API beg Compaq to add them to their
product list.

Under what conditions? I only had one overheat, and it was a
preproduction 667MHz CS20 in the environmental chamber at temperatures
that exceeded the published environmental limits by at least 20C (the
667's by nature will run hotter than the 833's). Ironically, in that
case, it was NOT the processors that had the problem, but rather the DIMMs
that were causing issues.
