Well thanks to the help on this list, I was able to boot from SRM using
a floppy. Unfortunately neither that nor using the latest kernel (2.4.19)
helps matters. My soundcard still freezes my machine.
One question -- is there a way I can just mount the root filesystem
readonly so that when the soundcard crashes my computer, I don't
have to go through the lengthy task of checking the filesystem
when I reboot? I tried passing "ro" to the kernel at boot up, but
it still mounts it as read write. I noticed in the rc files that
it explicitly mounts the root file system as read write there. How
can I override that?
SRM seems pretty nice, but I do notice that my clock is wildly off
most of the time. (It was generally off before, but now it is wildly off).
I suppose I'll try Alsa next. Or I guess I can try to debug the
sound card driver. Anybody have any other bright ideas?
Thanks (in advance, or just in general),
Allen Z.
