Note that under a 2.6.0-test11 (and earlier) kernel, I had to specify:
root=/dev/rd!c0d0p2 # yes, an exclamation point not a slash
to get the kernel's parsing of the root device string to work as desired,
and, apparently, as intended... ;-}
