XFree86 4.x doesn't support all the S3 cards that 3.3.6 supports
(not yet, anyways). There's a lot of S3 cards with oddball
RAMDACs that XFree86 4.x hasn't yet been equipped to handle; I'm
betting yours is one of them.
FWIW, I'm in the same tight spot.

Probably a good idea to stick with 3.3.6 or get a different card.
I would recommend a Radeon 7200/7500 PCI. I'd get one myself
but can't afford it at the moment...
