I do not know about "a lot". Quite a while ago I recompiled on 7.2
installation one of early srpms of XFree86-4.3 on Alpha. It required
few tools/libraries, like correct versions of freetype, but not much
else was involved. It is true that such recompilation requires a
sizeable chunk of a free disk space (count around 1 Gig with some
reserve) and takes a considerable time but otherwise it was rather
uneventfull. What I got from that works "good enough" in my particular
setup so I never repeated that exercise with updated srpms but after
configuring out things like TLS I would be somewhat surprised if much
would change.

For me this made a difference between an unusable graphic card
(Radeon 7500) and a card which works rather nicely.
