I have a strong suspicion that this trouble you are seeing is really
"generic" and not that much related to Alpha. For one possible reason,
and a possible workaround, see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=194105
Check also
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5678
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5133
and related.
Actually versions you can find in the current rawhide are definitely
in a better shape than what is included in FC5. Still a general
advice not to use 'ati' wrapper for a driver but 'radeon' instead
still holds and I still need an explicit configuration as described
in bz 194105 or my machine with Radeon 9500 is dead in an instant.
In any case searching at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/query.cgi
for bugs in xorg "Product" and with "radeon" string in comments
is producing quite impressive list. 1/2 :-)
