After rebuilding on my LX164 machine using 
dbus-1.1.2-8.fc8.1axp.src.rpm and re-installing 'dbus',
'dbus-libs', 'dbus-x11', and 'dbus-devel' (and starting
messagebus and haldaemon), the new messagebus service
can survive smolt access. Now the present profile of
my machine should be in the database.
(didn't reboot the machine yet...)
