Thanks Jay.

According to a product brief from Alpha Processor Inc. of
the motherboard (attached to this mail), the maximum
is 1GB, but it's the only one that says so.
(www.alphalinux.org/firmware/api/LX/164LX.PDF)

"Digital Semiconductor AlphaPC 164LX Motherboard Product
Brief" which is found on
  http://h18002.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/technology/chip-docs.html,
as well as "AlphaPC 164LX Motherboard Technical Reference Manual"
(EC–R46WC–TE) found on the same page, on the contrary, says
"up to 512MB", and I'm wondering which is correct.

I got 4 256MB memory which will be delivered in a few days,
and I'll experiment using them.

Hello,

I can confirm that *some* 256MB ECC memory modules work on 164LX, but some do not. The 256MB memory modules should be as follows:

* (SDR) SDRAM DIMM
* width 72 bits (i.e. ECC capable)
* not buffered / not registered
* max clock rate of 100 MHz is sufficient, higher should be ok
* each DIMM has 18 chips of 128 Mbits
* each chip organized as 16M addresses x 8 bits

As specific examples that I have tested:

* Kingston KVR100X72C2/256 works ok.
* Kingston KVR133X72C3/256 does not work, due to wrong layout.

Best regards,
Juhana Helovuo
