Your frustration is understandable; you need to go into this with the
realization that
1) It's a new environment.
2) It's mostly free; this means that you'll have to do some legwork yourself
in learning things --though all the tools are well documented you'll get no
glossy glitzy brochure screaming out all the wonderful things you can do--
you'll discover the things that are useful to you pretty much as you go along
(note that a large proportion of what you pay for off the shelf software is
actually going into those glitzy brochures:-)
3) The end result you achieve with Linux may be far better than what you
achieve on msdog or win95;
however the path will often be different.
If you are in a situation where you *need* to use the *same* tools as your
co-workers --e.g. an office full of people who use PowerPoint and with whom
you need to share work, then Linux is probably not the right solution for
you. However if your work requires you to produce a slick slide presentation
where no one cares what tools you actually used to do it, then Linux is
certainly a feasible environment
4) The tools you use on linux will be different from what you use on Dos;
after all you never sent MicroSoft mail asking how you could run lilo on
Win95; so why do you expect MS word and other windows specific solutions on
Linux?
5) Your message requesting someone to write a doubletalk driver did make it to
this list.
