Installing Speakup on a Notebook with Slackware 4.0

Hi All

I wondered if anyone could help? I've managed, several times, to install
Slackware 4 on a 128 Mb partition on my Compaq Amarda 1100 Notebook, using
Speakup.

Firstly, I couldn't complete the installation because the text.gz file I
used did not match the other files. So I used the text.gz from my CD and it
works very well. However, the bareide.lt file is kernel 2.1.10 and my
installation uses the 2.2.6 kernel. Consequently, if I use loadlin with
bareide.lt I get speech but I also get a number of errors because module
files cannot be found. So I need to install Speakup to the 2.2.6 kernel.
I've installed parts of the a,ap, d and tcl disk sets. I'm confident that I
have all the tools I need to install Speakup. However, I can't do it. I
can't find the Slackware 4.0 specific documentation for recompiling the
kernel. To ensure that everything was working I booted by using lilo and
loaded Svlpro and a BNS to attempt the installation of Speakup. However,
the BNS crashed several times, I guess because text went scrolling up the
screen. The speech I did get seemed to indicate that no hugs were made
successfully. I also got several prompts for a filename. I didn't know what
to do so I pressed enter and so it went on.

So now I'm thinking that I have 2 choices:

Find some more courage and try again with a little help. Or find a generic
Slackware 2.2.6 Kernel with the Speakup driver already built in.

Therefore friends; Is there anyone who has installed Speakup 0.07 on a
Slackware 4.0 system and willing to give me some guidance on the
installation procedure? Or, is there a ready to use Kernel that I can
download?

Thank you
