Using apps that require vt100 in Emacspeak

Hi all,

     I'm working with a person who is trying to use pine with Emacspeak.
I've never used Emacspeak and don't know much about it.  The $TERM
variable for the emacs session is set to dumb.  Does it have to be that
way.  When we tried setting the terminal to vt100 and ran pine, we just
got all the vt100 control sequences spoken right along with the text.  Any
ideas?
