I think it all depends under x which windowmanager you are using.
I don't know exectly which one is better or which one will get rid of the problems you note above.
What I do know is that x is not just like windows with one kind of look and touch to it. There are at least 10 or 20 windowmanagers out there which all are different from each other.
And also variating from simple low-diskusage once to advanced system.
If neede there also could be an windowmanager written specially for better access.
