At the risk of writing too much on this subject, with limited
knowledge, I would also point out that (as can be seen from software
listings such as those maintained at http://freshmeat.net/), most
developers tend to use pre-existing components when building their
user interfaces, for example, QT and GTK+. Standard protocols and
software interfaces (E.G. the Document Object Model for the World Wide
Web) can also be harnessed as means of implementing non-visual forms
of user interaction. At this point, software developers need to become
involved in these efforts; instead of being a recurring theme on this
mailing list, the integration of braille and auditory interface
considerations into free software projects needs to become an agenda item for those who have the
skills and knowledge to write software.
