Subject: Access and Linux distributions
I've been running Red Hat 6.0 for three weeks now and think
they've done an excellent job with the distribution
(not to say that other distributions are not as good or
better).
Once RedHat was installed it took approximately 2 minutes
(including time to compile) to install the emacspeak source
distribution as released on the Cornell site
--admittedly the machine in question was a zippy 400mhz
Pentium with loads of RAM.
The main point is:
1)Let's make sure we dont rant and rave about distributions
like Redhat including one or the other package
2) Given the open source nature of the Redhat distribution,
it is very easy to customize the system once it's up-- if
blind users wish to see the distribution become more
accessible, the onus is on the user community --and
perhaps those interested in helping their close friends
who might need access-- to customize the setup, see what
works, and when such modifications are stable, pass it
back to the open source comunity.
Ultimately, this is how all open source software gets
developped-- nothing gets done by people climbing on
ideology horses and making grand demands about what someone
else should be doing.
