RE: issues with X Window

hiya,
what is the current working status of gspeech, and what can I make it do
for me?

let's say I install gnome and all that on a nice redhat 6
system, what can I get out of the graphical system in a useful fashion?

please lemme know where to find any useful docs on this subject!
thanks,

Joel

Yes, GSpeech will work only with Gtk+ applications.
Word Perfect 8 is, as far as I can tell, built using Motif, so you may have
some luck using UltraSonix.
Note, however, that Corel plans to port their new WordPerfect using
Wine (a sort of Windows emulation library). It's possible that the
existing software for enabling blind access for windows will work with some
effort under wine.

Unfortunately Mozilla uses very little of gtk+, so you will be able to
browse the menus and little more. This isn't as bad as it sounds,
because Mozilla has other targets and lynx or w3 with emacspeak is
the web browser of choice for the blind. A custom web browser may
be built, though, with little effort.
Remember that the primary interface of a blind will always be the
text interface, no way around it. There is no point trying to enable
the use of Mozilla when you have a better program already.
Enabling the use of gnumeric, instead, makes lots of sense, because
there isn't an advanced text-based spreadsheet. Besides, gnumeric
with GSpeech works quite fine (Miguel de Icaza is very helpful
adding the simple hooks needed to enable this).
