Right now you need the window-manager module that is not currently 
written yet and a bit of experimentation.
You will be able to use some of the features of a lot of gtk+
applications (the test I tryed with the monitor switched off is:
edit a spread-sheet with gnumeric, save the result in a text file,
open it with gedit add/change something and mail it with the editor
builtin email plugin).
You will need sighted assistance, I think, to setup the enviroment
(festival and X windows...).

I hope that in a few months there will be support for this in the
distributions (I plan to package gspeech for Debian).
