installing linux

Is there a way that possibly a linux installation that would talk could be developed/ I would like to start rerunning linux, but I am not sure if I can get that installed. What would be the best way to do this so that I could keep my windows environment, and still put linux on a laoptop. I have a del inspron 7500, and I would loke to see how this would work.
