i suggest you set a password for root before attempting to do a remote login 
on your system dave.
   I didnt see any documentation on it but i seem to remember having similar problem 
when first installing my slakware.
   for security reasons i believe remote logins of any kind require a password and if 
there is none set then no remotes will be allowed.
 so from the console do passwd 
and enter your new password twice as it prompts ya for it twice and then try your serial 
login again
