Petra,
I am in the same position. I have Caldera Linux running on my
system and am trying to set up emacspeak. From what I've seen
emacspeak lets you do just about anything you would normally want
to do on a Unix workstation but the cost is a learning curve
to learn emacs and its operation.
Right now I am a vi user and use vi and screen to get multiple sessions
just like emacs lets you use multiple buffers. The problem with my current
setup is that it requires an extra PC set up as a dumb terminal (DOS running
Telix and Vocal-Eyes). This may not be such a big problem considering that the
linux box doesn't require a monitor or keyboard so the additional cost is
fairly minimal (386 PC with 50 Meg hard drive and 2 serial ports is all you
need).
Why do I want emacspeak then? One reason is that the audio desktop
environment described its documentation sounds very user friendly and I'm
hoping it will allow better access to internet browser and MP3 than I
have with my current setup.
