Geetha,

Try adding "init=/bin/sh" to the list of boot parameters.  This should
cause a shell to start up right away instead of init.  Then run
/sbin/fsck /dev/hda2
assuming your hard disk is /dev/hda2.  You will probably have to type y a
bunch of times to respond to prompts about whether to fix errors in the
filesystem.
