iomega zip 650 usb cd burner

A little while ago I got one of those drives.  I managed to get it to read
cd's but never managed to get it to burn successfully.  The drive had fifo
errors about 17mb into the burn and I was told lowering the speed might
help.  I ran it at 4, and another contact got the drive to error out with
fifo errors at 20mb with a speed of 2.  I'm wondering if going with a
speed of 0 is likely to get me and this other contact any better results.
The drive on my machine at the time I was using it was at sdb1 and was the
only sdb type device being used.
