It did as I said don't use speakup now as there are better and more
flexible alternatives...

No, yasr. Yasr is a console screenreader, you should give it ago. The
only thing you need is an emacspeak speech server, I can send you a
binary off list!
And how about brltty speech if you use braille?
The advantage to this is it will read what you see on your display.
