streaming in Linux?

In some cases you can use video downloaders to capture the
video and pipe it to mplayer.
e.g:
url="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQW87VU__Pc"
youtube-dl -q -r 44.6m -o - $url | mplayer -quiet -
