Nice that it's reproducible!

Firstly, we've just checked newer 2.4 kernel patches into 
device-mapper CVS: please re-test with them.

If it still goes wrong, please try to provide the full set of 
(processed) kernel error messages.

Other things to try:  
  Does it still fail if you miss out the xfs_freeze commands?
  Does it fail if you use ext3 instead of xfs?
