I give up.

To figure out my setup, I started by plugging speakers into front and
back, and set every mixer setting to 50%. Then I started a cd and an mp3
at the same time. Then I stuck my head in between all the speakers, and
tried every possible combination of mixer settings in aumix that I could
think of.

You might have more luck if you run a longer sound clip, and play with the
mixer settings while the sound is running.
