New kernel please

I've just done a hardware upgrade/shuffle with the result that my Athlon
system now has my IBM-DTLA-307030.

Since I've got rather slick with my kickstart process I reinstalled RHL 7.2
on it.

Using the kernel 2.4.9-13 I get (at best) about 25 Mbtes/sec from the drive
as measured by hdparm.

I built my own custom 2.4.17 kernel and now:

[root numbat root]# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.82 seconds = 35.16 MB/sec
[root numbat root]#

The drive's rated at, I think, 38 Mbytes/sec - its one of the Deskstar ???75
(GXP?) line of ATA-5 7200 RPM drives.

The motherboard's an Asus A7V133-C.

More importantly, the system's appreciably faster.

Time, I suggest, for RH to roll out a kernel update;-)
