I haven't had a chance to check since I got LILO fixed. But...since GRUB uses
BIOS for drive detection, I suspect my screwed up BIOS enty for /dev/hdb may be
the reason GRUB couldn't find the stage files on the /boot filesystem.
I'll check this in a bit and answer your question if I can.
