I now have GRUB working too. I entered:
grub-install --recheck /dev/hda
So, the faulty BIOS entry for /dev/hdb was the culprit.
Thanks to all who've helped me on this. Once upon a time, many years ago, I was
a Solaris sysadmin. I don't do that anymore, but I like to maintain my knowledge
of things Unix and Linux.
