I often tell the BIOS that I only have one drive - my server currently has 
three plus an EIDE CD reader.

It's simpler than maintaining the truth (I tend to shuffle regularly) and 
faster at boot time than 'auto."

I've been doing it ever since I discovered OS/2 didn't use the BIOS 
information - before I began using Linux. Neither OS/2 nor Linux places a lot 
of value in the BIOS information about drives.


I suspect that Grub's stage1 has to be readable by the BIOS too, but I've not 
put it to any test.
