First try the latest supported update kernel, kernel-2.4.9-13.
It installs and runs without a murmur along with the other
updates for enigma.
Then try the possibly dangerous kernel-2.4.16-0.13 from
ftp://rawhide.redhat.com. It has been running for me on enigma
since yesterday and I haven't seen any damage yet.
Rawhide packages are works in progress - not supported and often
broken, but sometimes they work amazingly well too. Use only on
machines that are 'disposable' or that you are willing to risk having
to reinstall.
kernel-2.4.16-0.13 wants gcc3 and libgcc which I installed from
enigma, not rawhide. It also wants a newer modutils so I tried
modutils from rawhide - but had problems with it.
So I tried going back to the enigma modutils. The depmod complains
but it seems to be enough to let mkinitrd build me a new initrd.
I can boot without major errors and disaster has not hit yet.
And, hdparm -t says my ATA100 drive is now 40% faster.
Send me your camera - I'll try it out for you !! :-)
Update kernels and rawhide kernels much easier
and quicker than a from-scratch port of the latest kernel to enigma.
