The PC has Award BIOS 6.00. When I installed the new HDs, the BIOS when through
it's auto-detection scheme. All three drives were detected, the sector/hd/track
layout was loaded and was displayed during the POR boot routine. /dev/hda and
/dev/hdd were Western Digital drives, /dev/hdb was a Maxtor. The BIOS entry for
the two Western Digital correctly had "auto" for the drive BIOS detection, the
Maxtor had "none" (apparently from the initial BIOS pnp detection.)

Since the splash entries looked correct, I didn't look deeper. Later, when I did
look deeper, I found the differences. I changed the Maxtor drive to "auto" like
the two Western Digitals and everything started working.

Why? I dunno!
