alsa thing

Using the 2.4.9-13 kernel and all current "updates" from Red Hat Network.

I installed ALSA 0.5-12a driver, ALSA 0.5-10b lib, and ALSA 0.5-10 utils. (Noticed no error messages on install).

When I reboot, I get a dialog box:

Error while initializing the sound driver
Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound servier will continue, using the null output device

Then, true to form, I have no sound. (Muting/unmuting has no effect).

If anyone can help, here's what shows up for "dsp" stuff in /dev:

   lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            9 Jan  1 14:15 dsp -> /dev/dsp0
   crw------- 1 root root 14, 3 Jan 1 14:15 dsp0
   crw------- 1 root root 14, 19 Jan 1 14:15 dsp1
   crw------- 1 root root 14, 35 Jan 1 14:15 dsp2
   crw------- 1 root root 14, 51 Jan 1 14:15 dsp3
   crw------- 1 root root 55, 0 Aug 30 15:30 dsp56k

and here's my modules.conf:

   alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
   alias eth0 3c59x
   alias usb-controller usb-uhci

   alias char-major-116 snd
   alias snd-card-0 snd-card-emu10k1
   alias char-major-14 soundcore
   alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
   alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
   alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
   alias sound-service-0-3 snd-psm-oss
   alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
   alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

options snd snd-major-116 snd_cards_limit=1 snd_device_gid=0 snd_decide_uid=0
options snd-card-emu10k1 snd_index=0

post-install snd-card-emu10k1 alsactl restore

Gracias and New Year's wishes,

SJR
