But even if it was "legally" possible right now to redistribute binary
packages of mplayer, it wouldn't really help since almost all optimisations
specific to the computer used (cpu etc.) are detected and hard-coded at
compile time into the program.
Their other goal, apart from becoming 100% free, is to get those checks to
perform at run time.
MPlayer is good, true, but it's a real pain for now and having Ogle for DVD
playback and avifile (aviplay) for DivX is my current choice. Xine is also
fairly mature... just try and pick ;-)
