I know this is not amusing to you but we normally get the opposite behavior.
That is, the default kernel booted is a dual processor kernel on a single
processor machine causing a kernel panic..
1. I don't want to insult you, but, are you sure you have a dual processor
machine?
2. If you do the problem is probably the initrd file which has not been
properly constructed. If you create a new initrd file for the smp kernel be
sure to run the lilo before you reboot. You can tell if initrd file is the
problem because the kernel panic message will ask you to use an init= clause
when you boot.
I that does not work indicate the exact text of the kernel panic message. It
will contain an indication of the problem.
