Have you tried disabling the onboard video, and testing with
another video card? Please enter a bug for that video card,
and include the output from "lspci -v" in the bug description.

I am trying to install RedHat on an HP Vectra VL 6/xxx Series 8. This
is a Pentium II machine running at 350 MHz with 128 MB RAM. The video
card is an MGA 100 Productiva with 4 MB of RAM. The install goes well,
I successfully test X at the resolution I want to run (1024x768 16-bit
color.) But when I reboot and try to start Gnome it locks up the
machine solid.
Steps I have done to try and dicern/correct the problem.
1.) Removed the sound card to no effect.
2.) Went into /root/.gnome/default.wm and changed the Window Manager to
twm instead of Sawfish to no effect.
3.) Complete clean reinstall (adding KDE to the list)
4.) Tried starting KDE, which works great.
5.) Upgrade the system BIOS (vid card is built-in and fixes to the card
were mentioned), to no effect
6.) Upgraded the kernel and all other updates available via up2date, to
no effect
7.) Changed NIC card slot (only card plugged in now), to no effect
8.) Replaced NIC card with a different model, to no effect
9.) Installed Ximian Gnome, stilling waiting for this isntall to finish
In all instances when trying to start Gnome on a clean installed
machine, or otherwise it gets past the spash screen, says its done
loading, and then all I get is a blue screen on which the mouse freezes
after a few seconds and keyboard does not respond. It seems to take the
machine out completely as I tried pinging it and that did not work
either (no firewalling installed.) ctrl+alt+backspace does nothing.
alt+(F1, F2, F3) does nothing.
Any idea where to look, or what might be causing this? Should I figure
out how to log a bug report and log this?
