Re: ldap Documentation

One of the thing that is almost not documented is pam_ldap and its usage,
you'll have to search the various mailing lists for clues on setting it up
correctly.

I think RedHat did this with authconfig. At least it appears to be working here.
What am I missing? I did not touch the pam.conf files.
That was one of the few things that appear to have been easy to setup wrt ldap.

authconfig does not setup correctly the /etc/pam.d/system-auth file (it relies in fact on ldap password freely accessible through the nss_ldap module and do not uses the pam_ldap module).

There is no support for setting up the ldap server itself, nor the replication.

You have to figure out yourself how to migrate data into the DIT and which scheme to use.

There is no support for easily maintaining the users and groups (for example the supplied tools like qd do not provides support to create groups as well as users like the useradd tool do, or to find the next avail id to use, ...).

All theses tools exists or needs to be improved to better support the task.

RedHat may bring Linux at a higher level in investing in theses technologies, like they are investing in RPM technologies and/or gcc tools.
I hope to see sometimes in the future a multi-users/multi-servers Linux plateform with various shares as easy to setup as NT (the NT4 Domain or NT5 Active Directory stuffs).
