OK for complex routing and maybe ssh, but why should a newbie not use a
box with networking and firewall on?

My $0.02 is that newbies should be taught that telnet is an ancient, obsolete tool now only useful in near-death experiences and Cisco routers, and that all communication is now done with ssh. *Everyone* should have SSH.

Networking, firewall, and ssh add practically nothing in terms of space; they're all small. When I do a firewall/gateway for a house (even though I add DNS, sendmail, dhcpd, and a few others) I still end up with less than 150MB of files. No reason not to include networking, firewalling, and ssh.
